Manage clinical risk factors for stroke/ TIA

  • Manage overweight or obesity in children (CRF-002) and adults (CRF-003); there is a strong association between high body mass index and cardiovascular disease.
  • Utilise opportunities to discuss and address other modifiable clinical risk factors including hypertension (CRF-001), high fasting plasma glucose (CRF-004) and high total cholesterol (CRF-005).
  • The importance of reducing these clinical risk factors is reiterated in the Stroke delivery plan (WG 2017).
  • The delivery plan also notes that atrial fibrillation (AF) is a specific risk factor for stroke; it calls for training staff at scale to improve identification of patients with AF who may benefit from anticoagulation (see below for relevant NICE guidelines on managing AF to reduce the risk of first or repeat stroke).
