Collated indicator datasets/ interactive profiling tools

The following resources provide access to collated health and well-being indicator datasets or tools:

  • Welsh health and care statistics mapping tool (WG): This tool shows the range of health and care statistics published that have data available for Wales.
  • National well-being indicators (WG): Data and summaries for each of the national well-being indicators.
  • Public Health Outcomes Framework (PHW): The Public Health Outcomes Framework sets out a shared understanding of the health outcomes that are important to the people of Wales.
  • COVID-19 Recovery Profile (PHW): The purpose of this profile is to monitor and understand trends in broader health related to COVID-19, and to enable a joined-up, public health response to recovery.
  • Health Maps Wales (DHCW): Explore a wide range of health indicators by area, map trends in data over time and make comparisons at local and national levels. Includes cancer mortality; A&E attendances; admissions summary statistics; outpatient referrals; population pyramids; all-cause mortality; illicit drug use admissions; and common procedure waiting times.
  • Profiling Places Wales (Data Cymru): This tool provides a range of information about towns and places across Wales.
  • InfoBaseCymru (Data Cymru): Provides easy access to a wide range of information for Wales; includes local area profiles reporting statistics on people, economy, education, health, housing, community safety, environment, and transport.

Sources of population health intelligence data

The following resources provide access to population health intelligence data:

  • Health and social care (ONS): Data/ publication collections cover Wales and include causes of death; child health; COVID-19; disability; drug use, alcohol and smoking; health care system; health inequalities; health and life expectancies; health and well-being; mental health; and social care.
  • Avoidable mortality in the UK Statistical bulletins (ONS): Deaths from causes considered avoidable, treatable or preventable given timely and effective healthcare or public health interventions.
  •  Data and analysis (PHW): Health intelligence products, data and analysis to address public health issues, improve health and health services, and reduce health inequalities (Public Health Wales).
  • General practice population profiles (PHW): The General Practice Population Profiles have been produced to assist practices and clusters with their respective development plans, which [were] a requirement of the Quality and Outcomes Framework GP Cluster Network Development Domain [NB: PHW have no current plans to refresh these profiles].
  • Welsh Cancer Intelligence and Surveillance Unit (PHW): WCISU is the National Cancer Registry for Wales and its primary role is to record, store and report on all incidence of cancer for the resident population of Wales wherever they are treated. Reports cover incidence, survival and mortality.
  • Child Measurement Programme for Wales (PHW): The Child Measurement Programme for Wales measures the height and weight of children in Reception class; annual reports and data tables are available.
  • National Survey for Wales: Explore results from all years of the National Survey in our easy-to-use results viewer from Welsh Government.
  • Welsh Health Survey: The survey provides information on health status, illnesses, lifestyle, health service use and children [NB: The Welsh Health Survey ceased in 2015; from April 2016 health and health related lifestyles are reported on using the National Survey for Wales].
  • Wales Migration Portal: Brings together publicly available data in one place via an online data tool which is simple and intuitive to use.
  • Social Care Wales Population Projections Platform (Social Care Wales): Can help you plan what care services might be required in your local area in the future, by showing you what the health and care needs of your population might look like over the next 20 years.

Sources of public health programme data

The following resources provide access to public health programme data:

  • Influenza Vaccine Online Reporting (IVOR) [Intranet only]: Influenza immunisation uptake data at general practice, cluster, local authority, and health board level from Public Health Wales.
  • Coverage of Vaccination Evaluated Rapidly (COVER) [Intranet only]: COVER reports detail uptake of the immunisations in the UK routine childhood schedule and are produced by Public Health Wales on a quarterly basis; an annual report is also produced covering the April to March financial year.
  • COVID-19 vaccination uptake (PHW): Vaccination uptake data from the Welsh Immunisation System.
  • Bowel Screening Wales (PHW): Programme statistical reports.
  • Breast Test Wales (PHW): Programme statistical reports.
  • Cervical Screening Wales (PHW): Programme statistical reports.
  • Diabetic Eye Screening Wales (PHW): Programme statistical reports.
  • Wales Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Screening (PHW): Programme statistical reports.
  • Making Every Contact Count (MECC): An approach to behaviour change that utilises the millions of day to day interactions that organisations and individuals have with other people to support them in making positive changes to their physical and mental health and well-being. Health board level data may be available from local leads for MECC delivery.
  • National Exercise Referral Scheme (NERS): NERS provides access to tailored and supervised exercise for those who are inactive and at risk of, or currently experiencing a long-term or chronic health condition. No uptake/ referral statistics or reports are currently available for download.
  • Help Me Quit: The single point of contact for smokers who want to stop smoking in Wales; data on Welsh resident smokers making a quit attempt via smoking cessation services are available from Welsh Government here

Sources of GP practice clinical activity data

The following resources provide access to GP practice clinical activity data:

  • NHS Wales Shared Services Partnership (NWSSP): NWSSP provide various GP services and this includes collection of contract monitoring/ activity data, some of which may not be subject to analysis or reporting currently.
  •  Primary Care Information Portal (DHCW) [Intranet only]: PCIP is a key source of primary care information for NHS Wales through the availability of reports produced either directly by DHCW or by other NHS Wales organisations with responsibility to publish such reports (that are signposted to via the Portal).
  • QAIF disease registers (StatsWales): Quality Assurance and Improvement Framework (QAIF) disease registers by local health board, cluster and GP practice.
  • Population health management: This data-driven approach involves segmentation, risk stratification and case-mix adjusted variation analysis and is being developed in all health boards; clusters should contact their primary care and/or local public health teams. See also CPSP section 2b.
  • Welsh Demographic Service (DHCW): WDS includes all patients registered with a GP in Wales who are also Welsh residents.
  • NHAIS/ Exeter: This includes all patients registered with a GP regardless of their residence location (i.e. includes English patients registered with a Welsh GP).
  • Local health board information units and/or primary care contract management teams may have access to raw general medical services data or bespoke analyses.

Sources of community pharmacy clinical activity data

The following resources provide access to community pharmacy clinical activity data:

  • NHS Wales Shared Services Partnership (NWSSP): NWSSP provide various pharmacy services and this includes collection of contract monitoring/ activity data, some of which may not be subject to analysis or reporting currently.
  • Pharmacy Enhanced Services (NWSSP): Dashboards around pharmacy data covering the Common Ailments Service; Discharge Medicines Review; Emergency Contraception; Emergency Medicines Supply; Seasonal Flu Vaccines; and the Smoking Cessation Service.
  • Local health board information units and/or primary care contract management teams may have access to raw community pharmacy data or bespoke analyses.

Sources of dental practice clinical activity/ oral health data

The following resources provide access to dental practice clinical activity/ oral health data:

  • NHS Wales Shared Services Partnership (NWSSP): NWSSP provide various dental services and this includes collection of contract monitoring/ activity data, some of which may not be subject to analysis or reporting currently.
  • Welsh Oral Health Information Unit: WOHIU works with the Wales Dental Epidemiology Co-ordinator to plan and deliver the NHS Dental Survey Programme for Wales. Access to Designed to Smile monitoring reports; Welsh Dental Survey reports; local health board oral health profiles; etc.
  • Adult Dental Health Survey (NHS Digital): The Adult Dental Health Survey collects information about the condition of adults' teeth and dental hygiene. It investigates dental experiences, knowledge of and attitudes towards dental care and oral hygiene. [Includes Welsh residents].
  • Local health board information units and/or primary care contract management teams may have access to raw dental data or bespoke analyses.

Sources of optometric practice clinical activity/ eye health data

The following resources provide access to optometric practice clinical activity/ eye health data:

  • NHS Wales Shared Services Partnership (NWSSP): NWSSP provide various ophthalmic services and this includes collection of contract monitoring/ activity data, some of which may not be subject to analysis or reporting currently.
  • Diabetic Eye Screening Wales (PHW): Programme statistical reports.
  • Local health board information units and/or primary care contract management teams may have access to raw optometric data or bespoke analyses.
