The number of people directly employed by NHS Wales today stands at 84,000 – a 20% increase over the last 10 years and of a third since the National Assembly for Wales was established. In primary care there are more than 2,000 GPs, more than 1,400 dentists and 800 optometrists working in Wales. There are also 2,300 registered pharmacists and 1,400 registered pharmacy technicians who either work in the managed sector or in the 714 community pharmacies distributed across Wales.
